Discrete Trial Training (DTT)
DTT breaks skills into small, teachable components presented in a structured format. Each trial has three parts: the instruction (antecedent), the child’s response, and the consequence (reinforcement or correction). Trials are repeated to build fluency. DTT is effective for teaching foundational skills like matching, imitation, labeling, and receptive language. It provides high rates of learning opportunities in a short time.
Natural Environment Teaching (NET)
NET embeds instruction in everyday activities and natural contexts. A therapist might teach requesting during snack time, social greetings during playground visits, or labeling during walks. Because learning occurs in context, skills generalize more readily. NET follows the child’s motivation and interests, making learning feel natural rather than clinical.
Pivotal Response Training (PRT)
PRT targets pivotal areas that produce widespread developmental improvements: motivation, self-management, response to multiple cues, and social initiation. By strengthening these pivotal skills, PRT produces improvements across many untargeted behaviors simultaneously. The approach is child-directed, uses natural reinforcement, and reinforces attempts rather than requiring perfect responses.
Functional Communication Training (FCT)
FCT teaches replacement communication behaviors for challenging behaviors. When a child learns to say “break please” instead of throwing materials, the challenging behavior becomes unnecessary. FCT is one of the most well-supported interventions for reducing problem behavior because it addresses the function (why the behavior occurs) rather than just the topography (what it looks like).
Choosing the Right Techniques
Effective ABA programs use multiple techniques based on each child’s needs, learning style, and treatment goals. A single session might combine DTT for new skill acquisition, NET for generalization, and FCT for behavior management. Treetop ABA Therapy’s BCBAs select and combine techniques to create the most effective treatment plan for each individual child.
