Techniques

June 13, 2025

ABA therapy uses a variety of evidence-based techniques, selected and combined based on each child’s individual needs, learning style, and treatment goals. Understanding these techniques helps families participate more effectively in their child’s treatment.

Discrete Trial Training (DTT)

DTT breaks skills into small, teachable components presented in structured, repeated trials. Each trial has a clear antecedent (instruction), opportunity for response, and consequence (reinforcement or correction). DTT is effective for teaching new skills like labeling objects, following instructions, and matching. Sessions are brief and interspersed with preferred activities.

Natural Environment Teaching (NET)

NET embeds learning opportunities within the child’s natural activities and interests. If a child loves bubbles, the therapist uses bubble play to practice requesting, turn-taking, and following directions. NET produces skills that generalize more readily to real-world settings because learning occurs in context.

Prompting and Prompt Fading

Prompts are cues that help a child perform a correct response. These range from full physical guidance to verbal hints to gestural cues. The goal is always to fade prompts systematically so the child performs independently. Prompt dependency (reliance on help) is avoided by planning fading from the beginning.

Reinforcement Strategies

Reinforcement is the engine of ABA. Identifying what motivates each individual child and using those motivators strategically is essential. Reinforcement may be tangible (toys, snacks), social (praise, attention), or activity-based (extra playtime). Effective therapists continuously assess and update reinforcement preferences.

Task Analysis and Chaining

Complex skills like handwashing or getting dressed are broken into sequential steps through task analysis. Chaining teaches these steps systematically, either from the beginning (forward chaining) or end (backward chaining) of the sequence. This approach makes complex skills achievable.
