Does Milk Cause Autism

February 19, 2025

No Scientific Evidence

There is no scientific evidence that drinking milk causes autism. Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition with strong genetic roots that begins during prenatal brain development. The claim that milk causes autism originates from the casein-free diet movement, which theorizes that some autistic individuals have difficulty processing casein (a protein in dairy). However, this theory relates to symptom management, not causation, and even the symptom management claims lack robust evidence.

The Casein-Free Diet Theory

The theory suggests that incompletely digested casein creates opioid-like peptides (casomorphins) that affect brain function and behavior. Proponents claim that removing dairy improves autistic symptoms. However, controlled studies have not consistently supported these claims. A Cochrane review found insufficient evidence to recommend casein-free diets for autism. Some families report anecdotal improvements, which may reflect placebo effects, natural developmental progress, or resolution of undiagnosed dairy sensitivity.

Dairy and Nutrition

Dairy products provide important nutrients including calcium, vitamin D, protein, and B vitamins. Removing dairy without proper supplementation can lead to nutritional deficiencies, particularly in children who already have restricted diets due to food aversions. If you are considering eliminating dairy, work with a pediatric dietitian to ensure adequate nutrition.

When Dairy Sensitivity Exists

Some autistic children do have genuine dairy sensitivities (lactose intolerance or milk protein allergy) that cause gastrointestinal discomfort. GI pain can worsen behavior, and treating the sensitivity may improve comfort and behavior. This is a medical issue, not an autism-specific dietary intervention. A gastroenterologist can test for dairy sensitivity.
