How to choose ABA therapy services in New Mexico

Choosing an ABA provider is one of the biggest decisions you will make after a diagnosis. Whether you live in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe or a smaller town, these are the questions that help families compare providers with confidence. It is also fine to ask hard questions about how a provider teaches and how they respect your child’s comfort. A good provider will welcome them.

1. Check who designs and supervises the plan

Your child’s program should be written by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) usually work with your child day to day, under that BCBA’s supervision. Ask who your child’s BCBA will be, how often they observe sessions, and how often they meet with you. You can confirm any BCBA’s certification for free in the BACB Certificant Registry on the BACB website.

2. Understand center-based and in-home ABA

Treetop offers both, and some families combine them. Neither setting is better for every child. Each has real advantages over the other.

Center-based ABA can have these advantages over in-home ABA:

  • A space built for learning, with materials and structure already in place
  • Chances to practice play and social skills with other children
  • Your child’s care team in one place, which can make it easier to talk through progress
  • A clear line between therapy time and home life, which some families find eases household stress

In-home ABA can have these advantages over center-based ABA:

  • Skills practiced in the places you need them, like meals, bath time and bedtime
  • No travel, which helps if the nearest center is a long drive away
  • An up-close look at strategies in action, so you can learn to use them yourself
  • Familiar surroundings, which can help some children feel calmer

A hybrid plan combines center and home sessions. Your child’s BCBA (the Board Certified Behavior Analyst who designs and oversees the plan) will work with you to recommend a balance that fits your child and your family’s routine. It can change over time.

3. Confirm coverage before you commit

Turquoise Care, New Mexico’s Medicaid program, includes ABA coverage when it is medically necessary, and many commercial plans cover ABA too. Coverage depends on your specific plan, so ask for it to be checked. A good provider checks your benefits and helps with prior authorization (the plan’s approval before services begin). Ask which plans they work with by name, not just “most insurance.”

4. Ask for a straight answer on start times

Ask how long families in your area currently wait for an assessment and for sessions to begin, and what support you get while you wait.

5. Look for parent involvement

Skills matter most when they carry over to everyday life. Look for parent training built into the program, clear goals you helped set, and regular progress updates you can understand.

6. Meet the team first

Visit the center or meet the BCBA before you start. Notice how staff talk to your child and to you, and whether your child seems comfortable with them. You should feel heard from the first conversation.

Got questions about our ABA services in New Mexico

How quickly can my child start ABA therapy in New Mexico?
Start times vary by region, but our New Mexico team works to reduce waitlists and move families through intake, insurance verification, and assessment as efficiently as possible.
Does insurance cover ABA therapy in New Mexico?

Often, yes. Turquoise Care, the New Mexico Medicaid program, covers ABA when it is medically necessary, and state-regulated private plans generally cover autism services. Some large employer plans that fund their own benefits are not required to. We check your benefits before you commit to anything.

Do you provide ABA therapy for toddlers in New Mexico?

Yes, we specialize in early intervention, meaning that we can offer ABA therapy for your child as young as 18 months. Starting ABA therapy for autism early helps progress happen more naturally and sets the foundation for stronger, longer-term outcomes.

If my plan covers ABA, does that mean it is approved?

Not automatically. Coverage means the benefit exists. Your plan still decides the setting, hours and dates, usually through prior authorization. We handle the paperwork and explain what is approved before the first session.

How much does ABA therapy cost?

It depends on your plan, not a flat rate. We verify your benefits first and tell you what you would owe before services begin.

Can ABA at home work alongside school?

Yes. With your permission, we can share strategies with your child’s school so everyone works toward similar goals.
