Follow Their Lead
The most effective play starts with joining your child in what they are already doing rather than imposing your own activity. If your child lines up cars, sit beside them and line up cars too. If they spin objects, spin one alongside them. This approach, central to techniques like Floortime and Natural Environment Teaching, communicates acceptance and builds the foundation for interaction. Once you are in their world, you can gradually introduce new elements.
Create Opportunities for Interaction
Once you have joined your child’s activity, look for natural opportunities to interact. Hold a desired item slightly out of reach to encourage a request (verbal, gestural, or eye contact). Take turns with a toy. Create a playful problem that requires your help (a jar they cannot open, a puzzle piece they need). Pause during a familiar routine and wait for them to indicate they want you to continue. These moments build communication naturally within play.
Use Their Interests
Autistic children’s intense interests are powerful motivators for engagement. If your child loves trains, use trains to practice counting, turn-taking, storytelling, and social scenarios. If they love letters, use letter play to build words, practice sounds, and create games. Working within their interests increases motivation and reduces resistance, making play more enjoyable for both of you.
Adapt to Their Sensory Needs
Consider the sensory environment during play. Some children engage better in quiet, dimly lit spaces. Others thrive with high-energy physical play. Offer sensory-rich options like water play, sand, play dough, or climbing. If your child is sensory-avoidant, respect their boundaries and introduce new textures gradually. Match the sensory intensity of play to what your child can comfortably process.
Celebrate Every Connection
Play with an autistic child may not look like typical parent-child play, and that is okay. A shared glance, a spontaneous smile, a gesture requesting “more,” or a moment of joint attention are all meaningful connections. Celebrate these moments. Avoid comparing your play interactions to neurotypical expectations. Treetop ABA Therapy teaches parents specific play strategies during parent training sessions, helping you build connection and support your child’s development through everyday activities.
