Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is one of the foundational teaching strategies used in ABA therapy. It breaks complex skills into small, manageable steps and teaches each step through structured, repeated practice with positive reinforcement.

How DTT Works

Each discrete trial has five components:

• Antecedent: The therapist presents an instruction or cue
• Prompt: Assistance provided if needed to help the child respond correctly
• Response: The child s behavior or answer
• Consequence: Reinforcement for correct responses or correction for errors
• Inter-trial interval: A brief pause before the next trial

What DTT Teaches

DTT is particularly effective for teaching foundational skills like identifying colors, shapes, and letters; following simple instructions; labeling objects; matching and sorting; and early communication skills.
