Feeding Challenges in Children with Autism

September 19, 2025

Feeding difficulties affect an estimated 70-90% of children with autism, making mealtimes one of the most common daily challenges families face.

Common Feeding Challenges

Food selectivity is most prevalent, with many autistic children eating fewer than 20 foods. Children may restrict based on texture, color, brand, or temperature. Other issues include oral motor difficulties, gastrointestinal problems, and mealtime behavior challenges.

Why Feeding Difficulties Are Common

Sensory processing differences play a major role. Textures, tastes, and smells may be experienced more intensely. Rigidity and preference for sameness, core autism features, also contribute as children find comfort in eating the same foods daily.

Evidence-Based Approaches

ABA-based feeding therapy uses systematic desensitization and positive reinforcement to gradually expand diets. This involves a hierarchy: tolerating food on the plate, touching it, smelling it, tasting it, and eventually eating it. Each step is reinforced at the child’s pace.

Tips for Families

Avoid forcing foods. Offer new foods alongside accepted ones without pressure. Involve your child in grocery shopping when possible. Consult your pediatrician about supplements if the diet is extremely limited. Seek professional support early, as feeding difficulties become more entrenched over time.
