Speech Therapy Is Highly Effective
Speech therapy is one of the most beneficial interventions for autistic children. Research consistently shows improvements in expressive language, receptive language, articulation, pragmatic (social) communication, and functional communication when delivered by a qualified speech-language pathologist. Speech therapy is considered a standard part of comprehensive autism treatment alongside ABA therapy and occupational therapy.
What Speech Therapy Addresses
For autistic children, speech therapy targets multiple areas: articulation and sound production, vocabulary and sentence building, understanding spoken language (receptive language), conversational skills (turn-taking, topic maintenance, asking questions), nonliteral language (idioms, sarcasm, jokes), voice volume and intonation (prosody), and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for nonverbal children.
Speech Therapy for Nonverbal Children
For children who have not developed spoken language, speech therapists play a critical role in introducing AAC systems. These include picture exchange systems (PECS), sign language, and speech-generating devices. The therapist evaluates which system best matches the child’s abilities and teaches the child and family to use it effectively. AAC use often supports rather than prevents the development of spoken language.
How Speech and ABA Therapy Work Together
Speech therapy and ABA therapy complement each other. Speech therapists address the mechanical aspects of communication (articulation, oral motor skills, language processing) while ABA therapists focus on the functional use of communication in daily life (requesting, protesting, commenting, answering questions). When both therapists coordinate their approaches, children make faster and more comprehensive progress.
Getting Started
Speech therapy may be covered through insurance, early intervention programs, school services, or Medicaid.
