Families of autistic individuals may qualify for several financial benefits and support programs. Navigating these options can be complex, but the financial assistance can significantly offset the costs of care and therapy.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
SSI provides monthly cash benefits to children and adults with disabilities who meet financial eligibility criteria. For children, eligibility is based on the child’s disability severity and the family’s income and assets. As of 2024, the maximum monthly SSI payment is approximately $943 for an individual. Receiving SSI also typically qualifies the individual for Medicaid.
Medicaid and CHIP
Medicaid covers ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other autism-related services. Eligibility varies by state. Georgia Medicaid covers ABA therapy for eligible children. Some states offer Medicaid waivers specifically for individuals with developmental disabilities that provide additional services like respite care and supported employment.
ABLE Accounts
Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) accounts allow individuals with disabilities diagnosed before age 26 to save up to $100,000 without affecting SSI or Medicaid eligibility. Funds can be used for education, housing, transportation, health, and other qualified expenses.
Tax Benefits
Families may deduct medical expenses exceeding 7.5% of adjusted gross income, including therapy costs and mileage to appointments. The Child and Dependent Care Credit may apply to autism-related care. Some states offer additional tax credits for disability-related expenses.
Navigating Benefits
A disability benefits counselor or social worker can help families identify all programs they qualify for. Many ABA therapy providers, including Treetop ABA Therapy, have staff who assist with insurance and benefits navigation.
