ADHD Does Not Cause Autism
ADHD and autism are separate neurodevelopmental conditions with different causes, and one does not cause the other. Both conditions have strong genetic components and involve differences in brain development that begin before birth. A child with ADHD does not develop autism as a result, and a child with autism does not develop ADHD because of their autism. They are distinct conditions that happen to co-occur at high rates.
Why They Co-Occur So Often
Research shows that 30 to 60 percent of autistic individuals also have ADHD, and 20 to 30 percent of those with ADHD have significant autistic traits. This high co-occurrence likely reflects shared genetic risk factors and overlapping brain development pathways. Genes that influence attention, executive function, and social cognition may contribute to both conditions. The co-occurrence is better explained by shared biological roots than by one condition causing the other.
Distinguishing Between the Two
Some symptoms overlap, making diagnosis challenging. Both conditions can involve difficulty with social interaction, sensory sensitivities, and executive function challenges. However, the underlying reasons differ. Social difficulties in ADHD typically stem from impulsivity and inattention, while in autism they relate to differences in social communication processing. A clinician experienced with both conditions can distinguish the contributions of each.
Diagnostic Considerations
Before 2013, the DSM did not allow simultaneous diagnosis of autism and ADHD. The DSM-5 changed this, recognizing that both conditions frequently coexist. If you suspect your child has both, seek a comprehensive evaluation that assesses for each condition independently. Standardized assessment tools, developmental history, and observation across multiple settings provide the clearest picture.
Treatment When Both Are Present
Treatment should address both conditions. ABA therapy targets social communication, behavior, and daily living skills associated with autism. ADHD-specific strategies, including environmental modifications and potentially medication, address attention, impulse control, and hyperactivity. Treetop ABA Therapy creates treatment plans that account for the full diagnostic picture, ensuring comprehensive support.
