Sibling Responsibilities and Autism

July 11, 2025

Growing up with an autistic sibling shapes a child’s experience in profound ways, bringing both unique challenges and unexpected strengths. Supporting neurotypical siblings is an important but often overlooked aspect of family autism care.

Common Sibling Experiences

Siblings of autistic children often report feeling a mix of love, protectiveness, frustration, and sometimes resentment. They may feel their own needs are secondary to their sibling’s therapy and support requirements. Some experience embarrassment during behavioral episodes in public, while others become fierce advocates for their sibling and the broader autism community.

Age-Appropriate Understanding

Children need age-appropriate explanations about their sibling’s autism. Young children can understand simple language: “Their brain works differently, and they need extra help with some things.” As siblings mature, they can understand more complex explanations about neurology, therapy goals, and why certain accommodations are necessary.

Managing Caregiving Expectations

It is natural for older siblings to take on some caregiving role, but parents should be mindful of over-burdening them. Siblings should not be expected to serve as full-time behavioral support or sacrifice their own activities consistently. Their childhood and developmental needs are equally important.

Supporting Siblings

Sibling support groups connect children with peers who understand their experience. Individual time with each parent, separate from autism-related activities, reinforces that each child is valued individually. Including siblings in therapy sessions when appropriate helps them understand strategies and feel part of the team. Treetop ABA Therapy includes sibling and family dynamics in its approach to comprehensive care.
