Recommended Screening Ages
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends developmental screening at 9, 18, and 30 months, with specific autism screening at 18 and 24 months. These screenings are part of regular well-child visits and typically involve the M-CHAT-R/F questionnaire. If a child has an older sibling with autism or shows early developmental concerns, screening may begin even earlier.
Early Signs to Watch For
By 12 months, look for limited babbling, no pointing or waving, and reduced response to their name. By 18 months, notice if the child has no single words, does not imitate actions, or shows limited pretend play. By 24 months, be aware if the child has no two-word phrases, limited interest in other children, or unusual repetitive behaviors. Any loss of previously acquired skills at any age warrants immediate evaluation.
The Evaluation Process
A comprehensive autism evaluation typically includes developmental history, standardized assessment tools (ADOS-2, ADI-R), cognitive testing, language evaluation, and observation. Evaluations are conducted by developmental pediatricians, child psychologists, or multidisciplinary teams. The process takes several hours and may be split across multiple appointments.
Where to Get Evaluated
Families can pursue evaluation through their pediatrician (who can screen and refer), early intervention programs (for children under three), school districts (which must evaluate upon request), children’s hospitals with developmental clinics, and private psychologists or developmental pediatricians. Wait times vary; some families wait months for appointments at specialized centers.
After the Evaluation
If autism is diagnosed, the next step is connecting with evidence-based services. ABA therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy should begin as soon as possible. Treetop ABA Therapy helps families move quickly from diagnosis to treatment, minimizing the gap between identification and intervention.
