Social Communication Differences
Autism involves persistent differences in social communication and interaction. These include difficulty with conversational reciprocity, reduced sharing of interests and emotions, challenges with nonverbal communication (eye contact, gestures, facial expressions), difficulty developing and maintaining relationships, and trouble adjusting behavior to different social contexts. These differences range from subtle to profound across the spectrum.
Restricted and Repetitive Behaviors
The second core domain includes stereotyped movements (hand flapping, rocking, spinning), insistence on sameness and resistance to change, highly focused and intense interests, and hyper- or hypo-reactivity to sensory input. At least two of these four types must be present for diagnosis. These behaviors serve important regulatory functions and vary in type and intensity across individuals.
Sensory Processing
Sensory differences are now recognized as a core feature. Autistic individuals may experience heightened sensitivity (hypersensitivity) or reduced sensitivity (hyposensitivity) across any sense: sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, proprioception, and vestibular input. Some individuals seek intense sensory input while others avoid it. Sensory profiles are highly individual and significantly affect daily functioning.
Cognitive Profiles
Autism occurs across the full range of intellectual ability. Common cognitive features include detail-focused processing (strong attention to specifics, sometimes at the expense of the big picture), differences in executive function (planning, organization, flexibility), uneven skill profiles (significant strengths alongside significant challenges), and often strong visual-spatial processing.
Strengths Associated with Autism
Autism is not solely defined by challenges. Many autistic individuals demonstrate exceptional memory, deep expertise in areas of interest, logical and systematic thinking, pattern recognition, honesty and directness, dedication to fairness and rules, and creative problem-solving. Treetop ABA Therapy recognizes and builds on these strengths in every treatment plan.
