How to Help 2 Year Old with Autism

March 2, 2025

Start Early Intervention

If your 2-year-old has been diagnosed with autism or shows developmental concerns, starting intervention immediately is the most impactful step. Contact your state’s early intervention program (free for children under 3) and seek an ABA therapy provider. Research consistently shows that children who begin intensive therapy before age 3 make the greatest gains. Do not wait for a formal diagnosis to pursue early intervention services.

Build Communication

At this age, focus on building functional communication. Respond to all communication attempts, including gestures, eye gaze, and reaching. Label objects and actions throughout the day. Use simple, clear language. Pause and wait to give your child time to respond. Introduce picture cards or signs if verbal language is limited. Narrate your actions: “Mommy is pouring milk. Here’s your milk.”

Create Predictable Routines

Toddlers with autism thrive on predictability. Establish consistent daily routines for meals, play, bath, and bedtime. Use simple visual schedules with pictures showing the sequence of activities. Give transition warnings before changing activities. Consistent routines reduce anxiety and create natural learning opportunities throughout the day.

Play-Based Learning

Join your child in their preferred activities. Sit at their level. Imitate what they do. Gradually add new elements to familiar play. Use preferred toys to practice requesting (“Want ball?”), turn-taking, and shared attention. Sensory play (water, sand, play dough) engages many toddlers. Keep play sessions short and positive; even two minutes of engaged interaction builds connection.

Take Care of Yourself

Parenting a toddler with autism is demanding. Seek support from other parents, family, and professionals. Connect with local or online autism parent groups. Accept help when offered. Your well-being matters. Treetop ABA Therapy provides early intervention services and parent training that empower families to support their child’s development from the start. Call (855) 800-9361.
