Discrete Trial Training
DTT is a structured technique where skills are broken into small steps and taught through repeated practice. Each trial includes an instruction, the child’s response, and a consequence (reinforcement or correction). DTT is effective for teaching new skills quickly, building vocabulary, and establishing foundational abilities. Sessions alternate between learning trials and brief breaks.
Natural Environment Teaching
NET uses everyday situations as teaching opportunities. Rather than sitting at a table, learning happens during play, meals, outings, and routines. The therapist follows the child’s interests, creating natural opportunities to practice skills. NET promotes generalization because skills are learned in the contexts where they will be used. It feels less formal and more engaging for many children.
Pivotal Response Training
PRT targets pivotal developmental areas (motivation, self-management, social initiation, response to multiple cues) that produce widespread improvements when strengthened. Child choice, turn-taking, natural reinforcement, and reinforcing attempts are key features. PRT is particularly effective for improving social communication and reducing disruptive behavior.
Task Analysis and Chaining
Complex skills like hand washing, getting dressed, or making a snack are broken into sequential steps through task analysis. Chaining teaches these steps systematically, either starting with the first step (forward chaining) or the last step (backward chaining). This technique is essential for building daily living skills and independence.
Selecting and Combining Techniques
Effective ABA treatment uses multiple techniques based on each child’s needs. A single session might include DTT for new skill acquisition, NET for generalization practice, and FCT for communication building. Treetop ABA Therapy’s BCBAs are trained in the full range of ABA techniques and select the optimal combination for each child’s treatment plan.
