Becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is one of the fastest paths into a rewarding healthcare career. The entire process can be completed in as little as 4-8 weeks, though timelines vary based on individual circumstances.

Step-by-Step Timeline

  • 40-hour training (2-4 weeks): Complete the BACB-approved training curriculum covering ABA principles, ethics, and practical skills. Available in-person or online.
  • Competency assessment (1 week): A BCBA or BCaBA evaluates your ability to perform essential RBT tasks through direct observation.
  • Background check (1-2 weeks): Complete a criminal background check through the BACB s designated vendor.
  • RBT exam (1-2 weeks to schedule): Pass the 85-question computer-based exam administered by Pearson VUE.

Prerequisites

You must be 18 years old, hold a high school diploma or equivalent, and pass a background check. No college degree is required.
