Electric cars do not cause autism. This claim has no basis in scientific research. Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition primarily driven by genetics, not by exposure to vehicles of any type.
Why This Claim Exists
The rise of electric vehicles and the increase in autism diagnoses have occurred during the same time period, leading some to draw a connection. However, many things have increased simultaneously, including organic food sales, smartphone ownership, and streaming service subscriptions. Correlation between any two rising trends does not indicate causation.
EMF Concerns
Some versions of this claim focus on electromagnetic fields produced by electric vehicle batteries and motors. These EMFs are low-frequency and fall well within international safety standards. They are comparable to or lower than EMFs produced by common household appliances like hair dryers, microwave ovens, and refrigerators. No research links these exposure levels to neurodevelopmental conditions.
What Actually Causes Autism
Autism results from genetic factors (accounting for 60-90% of risk) interacting with prenatal environmental influences. The brain differences that characterize autism form during fetal development, long before a child would have meaningful exposure to any vehicle’s electromagnetic field.
Better Use of Energy
Rather than worrying about unsubstantiated risk factors, families benefit most from pursuing developmental screening at recommended intervals and accessing evidence-based treatment when concerns arise. Early intervention with ABA therapy is the most productive response to an autism diagnosis.
