Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
ABA is the most researched autism therapy, using behavioral principles to teach skills and reduce challenging behaviors. It is individualized, data-driven, and delivered by certified professionals. ABA addresses communication, social skills, daily living, and academic readiness. Intensive early ABA (25-40 hours per week) shows the strongest outcomes. Treetop ABA Therapy provides comprehensive ABA services across 11 states.
Speech-Language Therapy
Speech therapy addresses expressive and receptive language, articulation, pragmatic (social) language, and augmentative communication. For nonverbal children, speech therapists introduce AAC systems. For verbal children, therapy targets conversational skills, figurative language, and voice modulation. Speech therapy and ABA complement each other well.
Occupational Therapy
OT addresses fine motor skills, self-care (dressing, feeding, hygiene), sensory processing, and handwriting. Sensory integration therapy, a specialized OT approach, helps children process and respond to sensory input more effectively. OT is particularly valuable for children who struggle with daily routines and classroom tasks.
Social Skills Training
Structured social skills groups teach explicit social rules, perspective-taking, conversation skills, and friendship building. Programs like Social Thinking and PEERS provide evidence-based curricula. Groups allow practice with peers in a supportive setting. Social skills training can be delivered by psychologists, ABA therapists, or speech therapists.
Choosing the Right Combination
Most autistic children benefit from a combination of therapies. ABA typically serves as the foundation, with speech and OT addressing specific skill areas. The ideal combination depends on your child’s age, needs, and goals. Your BCBA can help coordinate across providers to ensure a cohesive treatment plan.
