Autism Treatment for Children

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)

ABA therapy is the most extensively researched treatment for autism in children. It uses behavioral principles to teach communication, social skills, daily living skills, and academic readiness while reducing challenging behaviors. ABA is individualized to each child’s needs and delivered by certified professionals (BCBAs and RBTs). Research shows that early, intensive ABA produces significant improvements in IQ, language, and adaptive behavior.

Speech-Language Therapy

Speech therapy addresses communication challenges including delayed speech, articulation difficulties, pragmatic language (social use of language), and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for nonverbal children. Speech-language pathologists work on both expressive and receptive language skills. Many children benefit from combined ABA and speech therapy.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps children develop fine motor skills, self-care abilities, sensory processing strategies, and handwriting. OTs address sensory integration challenges that affect daily functioning. They may recommend sensory diets, adaptive equipment, or environmental modifications to support the child’s participation in daily activities.

Social Skills Groups

Structured social skills groups provide explicit instruction in social interaction, perspective-taking, conversation skills, and friendship maintenance. Groups allow children to practice skills with peers in a supportive environment. Many ABA providers and psychologists facilitate social skills groups for different age ranges.

Choosing the Right Approach

Most children benefit from a combination of therapies tailored to their individual needs. Your child’s treatment team should collaborate to create a cohesive plan. Treetop ABA Therapy coordinates with speech therapists, occupational therapists, and schools to provide comprehensive support.
