What Is a Behavior Technician

July 7, 2025

A behavior technician, formally called a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), is the frontline professional who delivers ABA therapy directly to children with autism. They are the people your child spends the most time with during therapy sessions.

What RBTs Do

RBTs implement the treatment plans designed by BCBAs. Their daily responsibilities include running skill acquisition programs (teaching new communication, social, and daily living skills), implementing behavior reduction strategies, collecting data on the child’s responses and progress, and providing reinforcement for appropriate behaviors. They work directly with children in homes, centers, schools, and community settings.

Qualifications and Training

To become an RBT, individuals must be at least 18 years old, complete a 40-hour training program covering ABA principles, pass a competency assessment with a BCBA, and pass the RBT certification exam administered by the BACB. They must receive ongoing supervision from a BCBA and complete annual continuing education.

The RBT-BCBA Relationship

RBTs work under the direction and supervision of a BCBA, who designs the treatment plan, monitors progress, and makes program adjustments. Regular supervision sessions ensure treatment fidelity and provide opportunities for the RBT to receive feedback and ask questions. This team structure ensures quality care.

Choosing a Provider with Strong RBTs

When evaluating ABA providers, ask about RBT qualifications, supervision ratios, and turnover rates. Consistency is important for autistic children, so providers with stable, well-supported staff deliver better outcomes. Treetop ABA Therapy invests in ongoing training and support for our behavior technicians.
