Standardized Autism Interventions

What Makes an Intervention Evidence-Based?

An intervention is considered evidence-based when multiple high-quality research studies demonstrate its effectiveness. The National Professional Development Center on ASD has identified 28 evidence-based practices for autism, including ABA-based methods, visual supports, social skills training, and others. Evidence-based means the intervention has been tested in controlled studies with positive results replicated by independent researchers.

ABA-Based Interventions

The majority of evidence-based autism interventions are rooted in ABA principles. These include discrete trial training, pivotal response training, functional communication training, naturalistic intervention, reinforcement, prompting, task analysis, and self-management. ABA provides the theoretical framework and methodology for most standardized behavioral interventions used with autistic individuals.

Speech and Language Interventions

Standardized speech interventions for autism include PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), JASPER (Joint Attention, Symbolic Play, Engagement, and Regulation), and various AAC approaches. These interventions have specific protocols and training requirements that standardize their implementation. Research supports their effectiveness for improving communication across the spectrum.

Social Skills Interventions

Structured social skills programs include Social Thinking (Michelle Garcia Winner), PEERS (Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills), and Social Stories (Carol Gray). Each has a defined curriculum, implementation guidelines, and research base. These programs provide explicit instruction in social skills that neurotypical children often learn implicitly.

Evaluating New Interventions

Families are frequently presented with new or alternative interventions. Evaluate claims critically: look for peer-reviewed research, ask about the theoretical basis, and consult your treatment team before trying anything new. Treetop ABA Therapy uses only evidence-based interventions and helps families evaluate treatment options.
