Recognize Autism in Others

December 15, 2025

Recognizing autism in others can help foster understanding and appropriate support. However, it is important to approach this with sensitivity, avoiding assumptions and respecting that only qualified professionals can make a diagnosis.

Observable Traits

  • Difficulty maintaining eye contact or unusual eye contact patterns
  • Differences in conversational style, such as monologuing about interests or difficulty with reciprocal dialogue
  • Repetitive movements or behaviors (stimming)
  • Strong reactions to sensory input like sounds or textures
  • Preference for routine and distress when plans change unexpectedly

What Not to Do

Never diagnose someone informally. Traits that resemble autism can have other explanations, including introversion, anxiety, ADHD, or simply personality differences. Pointing out perceived autistic traits to someone who has not disclosed a diagnosis can be hurtful.

How to Be Supportive

If someone in your life is autistic, listen to their needs, be flexible with social expectations, and educate yourself. Simple accommodations like reducing sensory stimulation or being direct in communication can make a meaningful difference.
