Current Prevalence Data
According to the CDC’s most recent data, approximately 1 in 36 children in the United States is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. This makes autism one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions. The rate has increased significantly from earlier estimates: 1 in 150 in 2000, 1 in 68 in 2012, 1 in 44 in 2018, and 1 in 36 in 2020. Autism is diagnosed in boys roughly four times more often than girls, though this gap may narrow as female diagnosis improves.
Why Rates Are Increasing
The increase in autism prevalence is primarily attributed to changes in diagnostic criteria, improved awareness, better screening practices, and broader recognition of autism across demographics. The DSM-5 consolidated several previously separate diagnoses (Asperger’s syndrome, PDD-NOS) under the single autism spectrum disorder category. Increased awareness among parents and professionals leads to more evaluations. Improved identification of autism in girls, minorities, and individuals without intellectual disability has also contributed.
Global Perspective
Autism prevalence varies globally due to differences in diagnostic criteria, screening practices, and awareness levels. Studies in the UK, Sweden, Japan, and South Korea have found similar or higher prevalence rates compared to the US. A 2011 South Korean study found a prevalence of 1 in 38. Lower rates reported in some developing countries likely reflect limited diagnostic infrastructure rather than genuinely lower prevalence.
Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities
Historically, white children were diagnosed with autism at higher rates than Black, Hispanic, and Asian children. Recent data shows this gap is narrowing as screening improves, though disparities in age of diagnosis and access to services persist. Children from lower-income families are diagnosed later and have less access to early intervention. Addressing these disparities is a public health priority.
