Make a Difference with a Career in In Home ABA Therapy

What In-Home ABA Therapy Involves

In-home ABA therapists deliver behavioral intervention directly in the child’s home environment. Sessions focus on daily living skills, communication, social interaction, behavior management, and parent training. Working in the home means you see the child in their natural environment, making therapy more relevant and skills more likely to generalize to everyday life. Sessions typically run two to four hours and may occur several times per week.

Career Paths in ABA

The primary entry point is the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) role, which requires a high school diploma, 40 hours of training, and passing the RBT certification exam. RBTs deliver direct therapy under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Advancing to BCBA requires a master’s degree in behavior analysis or a related field, supervised fieldwork, and passing the BCBA exam. Both roles offer stable employment in a growing field.

Daily Responsibilities

A typical day for an in-home therapist includes reviewing the treatment plan before the session, setting up materials and activities, implementing behavioral programs targeting specific goals, collecting data on the child’s responses, coaching parents on strategies they can use between sessions, and documenting progress. Flexibility and creativity are essential, as each child’s home environment and family dynamics are different.

The Impact You Can Make

In-home ABA therapists witness breakthroughs that change families’ lives. A nonverbal child using a communication device for the first time. A child with severe food aversion trying a new food. A parent learning techniques that reduce daily meltdowns. These moments are deeply rewarding and represent real, measurable progress. The relationships you build with families often last for years.
