Autism Diagnosis

June 10, 2025

An autism diagnosis is the gateway to understanding, support, and evidence-based treatment. Whether you are pursuing a diagnosis for your child or yourself, understanding the process reduces anxiety and helps you prepare.

Recognizing the Need for Evaluation

Evaluation is appropriate when developmental milestones are not being met, when teachers or other caregivers express concerns, when behaviors differ significantly from same-age peers, or when an individual (child or adult) struggles with social communication and displays repetitive patterns.

The Diagnostic Process

A comprehensive evaluation includes developmental and medical history review, standardized observation and assessment tools, cognitive and language testing, adaptive behavior evaluation, and input from multiple sources (parents, teachers, therapists). For children, the ADOS-2 is the gold-standard observational tool. For adults, the process may rely more heavily on self-report and developmental history.

Understanding the Results

The diagnostic report should clearly state whether autism spectrum disorder criteria are met, specify the support level (1, 2, or 3), identify co-occurring conditions, describe the individual’s specific profile of strengths and challenges, and provide treatment recommendations.
