Best Activities for Children with Autism at Home

July 20, 2025

Home is one of the best environments for building skills because activities happen in natural contexts with familiar people. These activities can be fun for the whole family while targeting communication, social, motor, and sensory goals.

Sensory Play Activities

Water play with cups, funnels, and sponges builds fine motor skills and provides calming sensory input. Playdough and kinetic sand develop hand strength while offering tactile exploration. Bubble play encourages visual tracking, reaching, and requesting. Sensory bins filled with rice, beans, or shredded paper with hidden objects encourage exploration and language (naming found items).

Communication-Building Activities

Cooking together provides natural opportunities to practice requesting (“I want the egg”), following directions, and sequencing steps. Reading books with repetitive phrases encourages participation and prediction. Singing songs with actions combines language, motor skills, and social engagement.

Social and Turn-Taking Games

Simple board games, building block towers and taking turns knocking them down, and rolling a ball back and forth build turn-taking skills. Pretend play with dolls, action figures, or toy kitchens develops imagination and social scripts. Follow-the-leader games practice imitation and body awareness.

Movement Activities

Obstacle courses using couch cushions, tunnels, and balance beams develop gross motor skills and body awareness. Yoga poses improve balance and self-regulation. Dance parties provide vestibular input and social fun. Outdoor activities like swinging, climbing, and riding bikes combine sensory input with motor development.
