Can Have Autism

June 30, 2025

Autism occurs in all racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and gender groups worldwide. While diagnosis rates vary across demographics, these differences largely reflect access to evaluation rather than true differences in occurrence.

Gender and Autism

Autism is currently diagnosed about four times more often in males than females. However, research increasingly suggests that females are significantly underdiagnosed. Girls and women may present differently, with better surface-level social skills and less obvious restricted interests. Diagnostic tools developed primarily based on male presentations may miss female autism.

Race and Ethnicity

Historically, white children have been diagnosed at higher rates than Black, Hispanic, and Asian children. Recent CDC data shows this gap narrowing as awareness increases across communities. The previous disparity reflected unequal access to evaluation and cultural barriers to diagnosis rather than different rates of autism occurrence.

Socioeconomic Factors

Higher-income families historically had higher diagnosis rates because of better access to specialists and evaluations. As public screening programs expand and insurance mandates improve access, diagnosis rates across income levels are converging. Autism itself does not discriminate by income.

Adults and Late Diagnosis

Many adults are receiving autism diagnoses for the first time. These individuals grew up before modern awareness and screening existed. Late diagnosis is particularly common among women, people of color, and those from cultures where autism awareness is lower.
