Do Teslas Cause Autism

June 15, 2025

There is no scientific evidence that Tesla vehicles or any electric cars cause autism. This claim appears to stem from broader concerns about electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and has no basis in peer-reviewed research.

The Origin of This Claim

Speculation about electric vehicles and autism seems to combine general anxiety about new technology with misunderstandings about electromagnetic radiation. Electric vehicles produce low-frequency electromagnetic fields from their motors and batteries, but these are well within safety limits and comparable to fields produced by many common household appliances.

What Science Says About EMFs

Extensive research on electromagnetic fields and health has not found links to neurodevelopmental conditions. The World Health Organization and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection both maintain that EMF exposure at levels found in consumer products does not pose health risks.

Why Autism Is Not Caused by Cars

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins during prenatal brain development, driven primarily by genetic factors. A child’s brain is already developing along an autistic trajectory long before they ride in any vehicle. No plausible biological mechanism connects vehicle electromagnetic fields to brain development changes that characterize autism.
