SSI Eligibility for Autism
Yes, autism spectrum disorder can qualify for Supplemental Security Income. The SSA lists autism under Section 12.10 of its Listing of Impairments. The individual must demonstrate marked limitations in social interaction, communication, or behavior. Both children and adults can qualify.
Requirements for Children
For children under 18, the SSA evaluates whether the child has marked and severe functional limitations. Six domains are assessed: acquiring information, attending to tasks, interacting with others, moving about, self-care, and health. Marked limitation in two domains or extreme limitation in one generally qualifies.
Requirements for Adults
Adults must demonstrate their condition prevents substantial gainful activity. The SSA evaluates social interaction, concentration, adaptation, and self-management. Medical records, therapy documentation, and educational records all contribute.
Application Tips
Gather comprehensive documentation: diagnostic evaluations, therapy notes, school records, IEPs, and statements from therapists. Be specific about functional limitations. Many initial applications are denied, so prepare to appeal.
