Functional Behavior Assessment in ABA Explained

August 22, 2025

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a systematic process used in ABA therapy to understand why challenging behaviors occur. It is the foundation for effective behavior intervention planning.

What an FBA Determines

Every behavior serves a function. The FBA identifies which of four primary functions drives a specific behavior: attention (social reinforcement from others), escape (avoiding something unpleasant), tangible (gaining access to an item or activity), or automatic (the behavior itself provides reinforcement). Knowing the function is essential because interventions must match the function to be effective.

Methods Used

FBAs use multiple data collection methods. Indirect methods include interviews with parents and teachers and review of records. Descriptive methods involve direct observation and ABC (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) data collection in natural settings. Functional analysis, the most rigorous method, systematically tests hypotheses by manipulating environmental conditions.

From Assessment to Intervention

FBA results directly inform the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). If a child screams to escape homework, the BIP might include breaking tasks into smaller steps, teaching the child to request breaks appropriately, and reinforcing task completion. The intervention matches the function identified by the FBA.

Who Conducts an FBA

Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) are trained to conduct FBAs. Schools may also conduct FBAs as part of special education services. At Treetop ABA Therapy, every child’s treatment plan begins with a thorough assessment including functional behavior analysis.
