Several types of professionals are qualified to diagnose autism spectrum disorder, though their specific qualifications vary by state. Knowing who to see helps families get timely, accurate evaluations.
Qualified Diagnosticians
Developmental pediatricians specialize in developmental conditions and are often the most sought-after diagnosticians for young children. Child psychologists and neuropsychologists conduct comprehensive evaluations including cognitive testing. Child psychiatrists can diagnose and also prescribe medication for co-occurring conditions. Some pediatric neurologists diagnose autism as well.
The Diagnostic Process
Regardless of who conducts the evaluation, a comprehensive autism diagnosis includes a detailed developmental history, standardized behavioral observation (typically the ADOS-2), cognitive and language assessment, adaptive behavior evaluation, and review of medical and educational records. The gold standard involves a multidisciplinary team approach.
Who Cannot Diagnose
Pediatricians can screen for autism using tools like the M-CHAT but cannot make a formal diagnosis. Teachers, therapists, and BCBAs may observe autism traits and recommend evaluation but are not qualified to diagnose. School psychologists can identify autism for educational purposes, but this is an educational classification, not a medical diagnosis.
Accessing Diagnostic Services
Wait times for developmental pediatricians can be 6-12 months or longer. To reduce wait times, ask for referrals to multiple providers simultaneously. Private psychologists may have shorter waits. Your school district can also conduct a free educational evaluation. Treetop ABA Therapy helps families navigate the diagnostic process and can begin services promptly after diagnosis.
