Assessments for Autism

August 14, 2025

Autism assessment involves a multi-step process from initial screening through comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. Understanding what to expect at each stage helps families prepare and reduces anxiety about the process.

Screening vs. Diagnosis

Screening identifies children who need further evaluation. It does not confirm or rule out autism. The M-CHAT-R/F is the most widely used screening tool for toddlers 16-30 months. The AAP recommends universal screening at 18 and 24 months, but screening can happen at any age when concerns exist.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation

A full evaluation is conducted by a multidisciplinary team that may include a developmental pediatrician, psychologist, speech-language pathologist, and occupational therapist. The evaluation typically includes parent interviews about developmental history, standardized observation tools like the ADOS-2, cognitive and language assessments, adaptive behavior measures, and review of medical and educational records.

What the Evaluation Measures

Clinicians assess social communication skills, presence and pattern of repetitive behaviors, sensory processing, cognitive abilities, language development, and adaptive functioning (daily living skills). This comprehensive picture informs both diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

After the Assessment

If autism is diagnosed, the evaluation team provides a written report with recommendations for intervention. This typically includes ABA therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy as appropriate. The report also supports applications for insurance coverage, school services, and state programs. Treetop ABA Therapy can help families translate evaluation recommendations into an actionable treatment plan.
