Can There Be a Cure for Level 2 Autism

July 6, 2025

Level 2 autism cannot be cured, but with appropriate support and intervention, individuals with Level 2 autism can develop significant new skills, increase independence, and improve their quality of life substantially.

What Level 2 Means

DSM-5 Level 2, “requiring substantial support,” describes individuals with noticeable deficits in social communication even with support in place. They show restricted interests that are apparent to others and have difficulty adapting to change. Level 2 represents the middle range of support needs on the autism spectrum.

Treatment Outcomes

Research shows that intensive ABA therapy can produce meaningful gains in communication, daily living skills, and social interaction for individuals with Level 2 autism. Some children show enough improvement that their assessed support needs shift to Level 1 over time. Others maintain Level 2 status but develop significantly greater independence and skill within that range.

Setting Meaningful Goals

Rather than pursuing a “cure,” effective treatment focuses on specific, functional goals: communicating needs and preferences, managing daily self-care independently, participating in educational or vocational activities, building satisfying social connections, and managing sensory and emotional challenges effectively.

Lifelong Support

Most individuals with Level 2 autism benefit from ongoing support throughout their lives, though the nature of support evolves. Intensive childhood therapy may transition to periodic consultation, supported employment, social groups, or community services in adulthood. Building a strong skill foundation early through ABA therapy creates the best trajectory.
