Social Communication Characteristics
Individuals with Level 1 autism (previously called high-functioning autism or Asperger’s) typically have functional verbal language but struggle with the social use of language. Characteristics include difficulty with conversational reciprocity, literal interpretation of language, challenges reading facial expressions and body language, tendency toward one-sided conversations about preferred topics, and difficulty adjusting communication style to different audiences.
Behavioral Characteristics
Intense, focused interests are a hallmark. These interests may be age-appropriate in topic but unusual in intensity. Preference for routine and predictability is common, with distress when routines change. Perfectionism and rigid thinking about rules and fairness frequently occur. Some individuals develop elaborate systems for organizing information or activities. These behavioral patterns can be both strengths (deep expertise, reliability) and challenges (inflexibility, social friction).
Sensory Processing
Sensory sensitivities are common though sometimes subtle. Individuals may be uncomfortable in clothing with tags or certain textures, overwhelmed by crowded or noisy environments, sensitive to specific foods based on texture, and affected by fluorescent lighting. Some develop strong coping strategies (wearing specific clothing brands, avoiding certain settings) that mask the underlying sensory differences.
Executive Function
Many individuals with Level 1 autism have executive function challenges including difficulty with organization, time management, task initiation, flexible thinking, and transitioning between activities. These challenges can significantly affect academic performance, employment, and daily living despite strong cognitive abilities in other areas.
