What Is an ASD Assessment

March 2, 2025

The Assessment Process

An autism assessment is a comprehensive evaluation conducted by qualified professionals to determine whether an individual meets diagnostic criteria for ASD. The process typically includes clinical interviews with parents/caregivers, direct observation and interaction with the individual, standardized assessment tools, review of developmental history, and evaluation of cognitive, language, and adaptive functioning. Most assessments take several hours across one or two appointments.

Assessment Tools

Common standardized tools include the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), which involves structured interaction; the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised), a parent interview; cognitive testing (WISC, WPPSI); language assessment (CELF, PLS); and adaptive behavior scales (Vineland, ABAS). Screening tools like the M-CHAT-R/F may be used initially but are not diagnostic.

Who Conducts Assessments

Autism assessments can be conducted by developmental pediatricians, clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, or multidisciplinary teams at children’s hospitals. School districts can evaluate for educational eligibility but typically do not provide a medical diagnosis. Choose an evaluator experienced with autism across the spectrum, including girls and individuals with average or above-average intelligence who may present subtly.

Preparing for the Assessment

Gather developmental records: baby books, developmental milestone notes, previous evaluations, school records, and therapy reports. Write down your specific concerns and examples of behaviors. Bring a list of medications. Ensure your child is well-rested and fed before the appointment. Avoid coaching your child on how to behave during the assessment; evaluators need to see natural behavior.

After the Assessment

You will receive a written report with findings, diagnosis (if applicable), and recommendations. If autism is diagnosed, the next step is connecting with treatment providers. Treetop ABA Therapy accepts referrals and can begin the intake process quickly, minimizing the wait between diagnosis and the start of services.
