Measuring Progress with Data
Quality ABA programs are data-driven. Your provider should collect data during every session and share progress reports regularly (at minimum quarterly). Look for specific, measurable goals with clear criteria for mastery. Progress should be visible in the data over time, though the rate of progress varies by skill and individual. If your child is not progressing on specific goals, the BCBA should modify the approach.
Quality Indicators
Effective ABA programs share common characteristics: comprehensive initial assessment, individualized treatment plans, regular BCBA supervision (minimum monthly, preferably weekly), ongoing parent training, evidence-based techniques, frequent data collection, regular plan updates, and coordination with other providers. If any of these elements is missing, discuss your concerns with the program leadership.
Questions to Ask Your Provider
Ask: How often is my child’s data reviewed? How frequently are goals updated? What is the BCBA supervision schedule? How are staff trained and evaluated? What happens when a child is not progressing? How do you generalize skills across settings? How do you incorporate my input into the treatment plan? The answers reveal whether the program follows best practices.
Signs a Program May Not Be Working
Red flags include no measurable progress over several months without program modification, inability to share data with you, infrequent BCBA supervision, high staff turnover, rigid adherence to a program despite lack of progress, and minimal family involvement. If you see these signs, advocate for changes or consider a different provider.
