Massachusetts offers extensive autism resources, from early diagnosis through adult services. The state has strong autism insurance mandates and a well-developed network of providers and support organizations.
Diagnostic Services
Massachusetts General Hospital’s Lurie Center for Autism is one of the nation’s leading diagnostic and research centers. Boston Children’s Hospital also provides comprehensive evaluations. For families outside the Boston area, community health centers and private psychologists offer autism evaluations, though wait times can be significant.
Insurance Coverage
Massachusetts law (ARICA) requires private insurers to cover autism diagnosis and treatment, including ABA therapy, with no annual dollar caps or visit limits. MassHealth (Medicaid) also covers ABA therapy. These strong mandates make Massachusetts one of the better states for accessing autism services.
Early Intervention
The Massachusetts Early Intervention program serves children birth to three with developmental concerns at no cost to families, regardless of income. Children can be referred by parents, physicians, or childcare providers. The program provides developmental services and connects families to additional resources.
Educational Services
Massachusetts Chapter 766 provides special education protections that exceed federal requirements. School districts must provide appropriate services through IEPs, and families have strong procedural protections including access to the Bureau of Special Education Appeals for dispute resolution.
Adult Services
The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) provides employment support, residential services, and day programs for eligible adults with autism. The Autism Commission advises on statewide policy. Several organizations offer transition planning for young adults aging out of school services.
