How to Become an ABA Therapist

June 9, 2025

Becoming an ABA therapist is a rewarding career path with strong job growth, competitive compensation, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of autistic individuals and their families.

Career Paths in ABA

The ABA field has two primary credential levels. Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) deliver direct therapy under supervision. Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) design treatment plans, supervise RBTs, and oversee clinical programs. Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts (BCaBAs) hold an intermediate credential.

Becoming an RBT

RBT certification requires a high school diploma, completion of a 40-hour training program, passing a competency assessment, and passing the RBT certification exam. Many ABA companies hire and train RBTs, making this an accessible entry point. The role provides direct experience working with autistic children and families.

Becoming a BCBA

BCBA certification requires a master’s degree in behavior analysis or a related field with approved coursework, completion of supervised fieldwork (2,000 hours), and passing the BCBA certification exam. Many programs can be completed online, with fieldwork completed locally. The investment leads to a career with excellent prospects.

Career Outlook

Demand for ABA professionals significantly exceeds supply. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects much-faster-than-average job growth in related occupations. BCBAs earn competitive salaries, with experienced clinicians in management roles earning well into six figures. RBTs earn starting wages that typically exceed other entry-level healthcare positions.
