Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a fertility treatment where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. Some studies have examined whether ICSI and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART) are associated with autism risk.
What Research Shows
Some studies have found modestly increased autism rates among children conceived through ART, including ICSI. However, these associations are likely explained by confounding factors rather than the procedures themselves. Parents using ART tend to be older, and advanced parental age is an independent autism risk factor. Multiple pregnancies and preterm births are more common with ART and are also associated with higher autism risk.
Expert Consensus
No fertility organization or medical society recommends against ICSI based on autism concerns. The procedure is considered safe and effective for appropriate candidates.
What Matters
If your child conceived through ICSI is diagnosed with autism, the cause is most likely the same complex genetic factors that cause autism in naturally conceived children. ABA therapy provides effective support regardless. Contact Treetop ABA Therapy.
