“Broad spectrum autism” is an informal term sometimes used to describe the wide range of presentations within autism spectrum disorder. It is not a formal diagnostic category but reflects the reality that autism looks very different from person to person.
What It Typically Refers To
When people use “broad spectrum,” they may mean that a person has some autistic traits that do not neatly fit into traditional descriptions, that the person s strengths and challenges span multiple areas in unpredictable ways, or that the diagnosis encompasses what were previously separate conditions (autism, Asperger s, PDD-NOS).
The Official Spectrum
The DSM-5 uses a single diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder with three severity levels based on support needs. This unified approach acknowledges that the boundaries between former subcategories were inconsistent and unhelpful.
