Can Child Have Autism at Any Age

December 27, 2025

Autism is a condition that is present from birth, though it may not be recognized until later. A child does not “develop” autism at a certain age; rather, the signs become apparent as developmental expectations increase and differences become more noticeable.

When Signs Typically Appear

Most autism signs become noticeable between 12 and 24 months, though some children show differences as early as 6 months. In some cases, children appear to develop typically before showing regression, losing previously acquired skills around 18-24 months.

Late Recognition vs. Late Onset

Some children are not diagnosed until school age or even later. This does not mean autism appeared later; it means the signs were missed, masked, or attributed to other factors. Girls and children with higher cognitive abilities are especially likely to be diagnosed late because their autism may present differently from classic descriptions.

Early Screening Is Key

  • The AAP recommends screening at 18 and 24 months
  • Parents should report any developmental concerns to their pediatrician
  • Do not wait to see if a child “grows out of it”
