How to Detect Autism

January 16, 2026

Detecting autism early is one of the most important things parents can do, because early intervention leads to significantly better outcomes. While only a qualified professional can make a formal diagnosis, understanding early signs can help you seek evaluation sooner.

Early Signs of Autism

  • Limited or no eye contact
  • Not responding to their name by 12 months
  • Not pointing to objects of interest by 14 months
  • Not engaging in pretend play by 18 months
  • Loss of previously acquired speech or social skills
  • Repetitive movements like hand-flapping or rocking
  • Unusual reactions to sounds, textures, or lights

Screening Tools

The AAP recommends universal autism screening at 18 and 24 months. The M-CHAT-R is the most commonly used tool, a parent questionnaire that identifies children at risk.

The Diagnostic Process

Formal evaluation involves direct observation using tools like the ADOS-2, developmental history review, cognitive and language assessments, and sometimes hearing and vision testing.
