Currently, there is no genetic test that can diagnose autism during pregnancy. While prenatal genetic testing can identify certain conditions associated with higher autism risk, autism itself cannot be detected before birth.
What Prenatal Testing Can and Cannot Do
- Can detect: Chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome, genetic syndromes associated with autism (Fragile X, tuberous sclerosis), and some rare single-gene conditions
- Cannot detect: Autism itself, because it involves complex combinations of common genetic variants that do not produce a clear prenatal signal
Genetic Counseling
Families with autism in their family history may benefit from genetic counseling to understand their specific risk factors, available testing options, and what results mean.
After Birth
Developmental monitoring from birth and formal autism screening at 18 and 24 months are the most effective early detection strategies. Early identification leads to early access to ABA therapy and better outcomes. Contact Treetop ABA Therapy.
