Understanding the differences between autism support levels helps families, educators, and clinicians provide appropriate care. The DSM-5 defines three levels based on the amount of support needed.
Level 1 vs. Level 2 vs. Level 3
Level 1 individuals communicate verbally but struggle with social initiation and flexibility. They generally manage daily tasks independently but need support in specific areas. Level 2 individuals have marked communication deficits, even with supports in place. Their restricted interests and difficulty with change are obvious to observers. Level 3 individuals have severe communication limitations, minimal speech, and extreme difficulty with change and daily functioning.
What the Levels Do Not Tell You
- Levels can change over time with effective intervention
- A person may function at different levels across different skills
- Levels do not indicate intelligence or potential
- Stress, environment, and other factors affect functioning
