Different Types of Autism

December 31, 2025

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a single diagnosis that encompasses a wide range of experiences. The DSM-5 classifies autism by support levels rather than separate types, though many people still use older terminology.

The Three Support Levels

  • Level 1 (Requiring Support): Difficulty initiating social interactions, inflexible behavior causes noticeable problems, organizational challenges. Previously called Asperger s Syndrome.
  • Level 2 (Requiring Substantial Support): Marked deficits in social communication, restricted interests obvious to casual observers, difficulty coping with change.
  • Level 3 (Requiring Very Substantial Support): Severe deficits in communication, very limited speech, extreme difficulty with change, significant distress in transitions.

Former Diagnostic Categories

Before 2013, several separate diagnoses existed: autistic disorder, Asperger s syndrome, PDD-NOS, and childhood disintegrative disorder. These were merged into the single ASD diagnosis because the boundaries between them were inconsistent.
